ADEAL Private: Boris - Currents

At regular intervals, we hold an event that is intended to involve our remote colleagues more, but also to give colleagues in general the opportunity to share exciting information about themselves that is otherwise more private (hobbies, vacations, passions, etc.). This time Boris took us on an exciting journey into the world of surfing and currents.

The Power of the Oceans: Understanding Currents & Surfing Safely!

The ocean is constantly in motion – from massive global current systems to dangerous rip currents that can pose a threat to swimmers and surfers. Here's an overview of the key currents every water sports enthusiast should know:

1️⃣ The Invisible Engines of the Ocean: Currents & Circulation

🔹 Surface currents – driven by wind, they regulate climate and distribute heat & nutrients (e.g., Gulf Stream).

🔹 Deep currents – created by temperature & salinity differences, they push cold water from polar regions deep into the ocean.

🔹 Thermohaline Circulation – the global "conveyor belt" of the ocean that connects all seas and affects the weather worldwide.

2️⃣ Danger for Swimmers & Surfers: Rip Currents & More

🔺 Rip Currents – narrow but strong currents that can pull swimmers out to sea. Surfers use them to get out to the waves faster.

🔺 How to spot them: Foamy, darker patches of water with no breaking waves or strong currents flowing outwards.

🔺 What to do: Don't swim against the current! Swim parallel to the shore or let yourself drift until the current weakens.

🔺 Other currents: Undertows (subsurface currents) & Rip Tides (tide-driven currents) impact coastal areas worldwide.

⚠️ Knowledge saves lives! Understanding currents makes surfing & swimming safer.
